Supporting SANE’s vital mental health work
We’re delighted that the St. James's Place Charitable Foundation has approved an award of £90,000 over the next three years to SANE, one of the UK’s leading mental health charities.
The funding will support SANE’s Call Back Service, helping people affected by mental illness to access ongoing emotional support, guidance and information when they need it most.
For John, this is a cause that is particularly close to home. As a Trustee on the Board of SANE, he has seen first-hand the difference the charity’s work can make to people and families facing some of the most difficult periods of their lives.
SANE has been working to improve the quality of life for people affected by mental illness since it was founded in 1986 by its Chief Executive, Marjorie Wallace CBE. The charity works across three key areas: providing emotional support, raising awareness and understanding of mental illness, and supporting research into its causes and treatments.
Its support services include SANEline, a national out-of-hours mental health helpline open 365 days a year, alongside email support, Textcare, online community support and its Call Back Service.
The charity supports not only people experiencing mental health difficulties themselves, but also family members, friends and carers who may need information, understanding or somewhere to turn.
The funding from the St. James's Place Charitable Foundation will specifically help SANE continue its Call Back Service.
The service provides people affected by mental illness, including family members and carers, with a consistent and supportive space to talk. Someone can leave their first name and telephone number through SANE’s dedicated voicemail service and receive a call back from the team.
Importantly, the service can provide support to people who may not be able to access SANEline during its opening hours. It offers an opportunity to talk through what they are experiencing and explore other forms of help or treatment that may be available.
This continuity of support can be particularly important when someone is experiencing ongoing distress or feels that they have nowhere else to turn.
John has been involved with SANE as a Trustee on its Board, giving him an opportunity to see the charity’s work from close quarters and understand the impact its services can have.
He was delighted to introduce Marjorie Wallace CBE and SANE to the St. James's Place Charitable Foundation, helping bring the charity’s work to the attention of the Foundation.
The resulting three-year, £90,000 award is an important investment in the Call Back Service and will help SANE continue providing support to people when they need someone to listen.
